According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 7,000 Maine residents will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Fortunately, area residents will soon have access to the best technology available for cancer treatment.
TAMC has been providing Radiation Therapy since the 1950's and currently provides services to patients with cancer using a diagnostic simulator and cobalt therapy equipment. Early this year, a linear accelerator, capable of treating more types of cancer, will replace our existing cobalt therapy equipment. Advantages of a linear accelerator over cobalt therapy include a more focused and deeper penetrating beam, which will allow for treatment of cancers such as Hodgkins Disease, skin cancer, and complicated central nervous system cancers.
Patients with cancer need radiation therapy services anywhere from three to seven days a week depending on the type of cancer and the stage of the disease. TAMC Radiation Therapy staff treat nearly 200 patients every year at the center. In addition to equipment upgrades, patients will have more privacy and greater comfort with the addition of new exam rooms, consultations rooms, a larger waiting area, changing rooms, and additional bathrooms.
Radiation therapy services are provided in conjunction with Spectrum Medical Group. Spectrum's Radiation Oncologists provide cancer therapy and radiation implants to over 1,300 new patients and complete over 30,000 treatments each year.
