04/18 Parents form new support group for families of children with Type 1 Diabetes

Two local mothers have joined forces to form a new support group, Touched by Type 1 in The County, to help both the children and adults in families that have a child diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.  The group is getting organized and is already planning their first event on Saturday, April 29.

Adults in the community who have any kind of ongoing health condition are invited to an informational session at The Aroostook Medical Center on Thursday, April 20, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. to learn more about an upcoming free six-session series, Living Well for Better Health.

The Aroostook Medical Center partnered with the Maine Agri-Women to host the second annual County Women’s Health Conference on Saturday, April 8, at TAMC.  Despite what the title may imply, however, there was a lot more than topics specific to women’s health taking place.

03/27 Choosing Wisely efforts help change attitudes about prescription drugs

Providers at The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle began work in 2013 to raise awareness and reduce the use of antibiotics for patients with acute sinusitis, also known as a sinus infection.  These efforts have come a long way in the past four years, and TAMC’s journey with this initiative was recently featured in a national newsletter by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

03/27 TAMC’s Survivor Aroostook Healthcare Career Exploration Summer Camp is taking applications

Through the month of March, representatives from TAMC’s Survivor Aroostook summer program are visiting area 8th grade classes to encourage participation in the one-of-a-kind opportunity. This year’s camp will take place at Northern Maine Community College from June 19 to 22.  The week long adventure of discovery, innovation, and exploration, with a healthcare twist, is designed to introduce area youth to possible careers in healthcare.

Telemedicine is a great tool that allows for specialty services to expand into rural areas, but sometimes the reverse is true and a quality service in a rural area can be expanded into a more populated area.  That is just the case of what happened in March with TAMC’s Sleep Medicine practice.
